Tutorial

Teaches algebraic factors - the factorisation of algebraic expressions, with emphasis on trinomials such as x² + 5x + 6, because it is important to master this skill. The procedure in algebraic factorization is explained in detail to ensure that students understand how it works. Many practice sessions are provided in the process to ensure that the student understands each step.

Practice

AlgeFactors is capable of generating hundreds of sums for drills to ensure that the student masters the skills. It also  includes sums involving perfect squares, such as 4x² - 12x + 9 and difference of two squares, such as 9x² - 25. These sums can be solved by using formulas.

The student may also key in his own sums and let the guide help him do them.

Now includes algebraic expressions that can be factorised by grouping, for example, ax + bx - ay - by.

Worked Examples

Almost 120 worked examples provide help for students who have difficulty in doing the sums.

Reports

You can print out a report at the end of each practice session. The report shows each sum with its correct answer and the student's answer marked. It also includes the percentage score, the average time taken to do each sum and other details.

Special Features

A step by step interactive guide is provided to help the student do the factorisation if he has difficulties. The guide does not do the sum for the student but guides him along, providing feedback on his working.

A student can key in his own sums and let the guide help him do it. This feature can help the student do his homework.

In this example, the following answers will all be accepted as correct:  Factorise 2x² + 6x + 4
2(x + 1)(x + 2) or 2(x + 2)(x + 1)
2(1 + x)(2 + x) or 2(2 + x)(1 + x)
2(1 + x)(x + 2) or 2(x + 2)(1 + x)
2(x + 1)(2 + x) or 2(2 + x)(x + 1)

This is very important as the students can be confused if a correct sum is marked as wrong.

Note that AlgeFactors will reject awkward answers such as (-1 + x)(x + 5). The answer should be (x - 1)(x + 5).

It allows two players to compete with each other on one computer, reducing the number of computers required for a class by half. Each player can do the sums at his own pace.
It prints two separate detailed reports, each showing the sums done by the individual player.
